We've lost the news

Like cooking a crab

As I watch different news stations report on the Ukraine war with 1 or 2 minutes of news followed by 15 minutes of senseless commentary, I drifted off; seniors do that. I started to reflect on what the news was like when I became aware of world events. For me, it was around 1967, and I was 12.

The family would sit down in front of the black-and-white beast, complete with a record player, and watch Walter Cronkite. My rich granny had the bucks for one of the first large screen color TVs, probably a massive 19 inches.

There were no drones with minute-by-minute war horrors, so Walter would list the death count on both sides, followed by some stock video. Imagine having the news and only the news without commentary. Finally, Walter, fed up with the stalemate, gave an opinion that went down in history as revolutionary.

I watch FOX like any good MAGA supporter, but I miss just the news, not really caring what Jesse has to say. My point is that we lose our norms slowly, like dumping a pile of crabs in a pot of cold water and then turning on the burner.

I’m not sure there is a point to my rant other than never to destroy our past history because it serves as a measuring stone to judge how far we have drifted from a once proud nation.

The other video I watched live on that same TV with my older aunt screaming, too funny.
