There's a plethora of how-to videos designed to help you prepare for a worst-case scenario like WW3; they are referred to as Go-Bags. In my humble opinion, these little bags are worthless.

You need to prepare a backpack as if you were going on a hike on the Appalachian Trail. It's easier than it sounds. One final word on camp safety: what are the odds of you keeping your life-saving water supply without a firearm?

Unfortunately, giving my recommendation of a firearm is risky business with the McAdoo KGB lurking, so all I can say is educate yourself, then purchase a firearm.
